91IO1tipeOL._SL1500_For a second consecutive month, Tomorrow’s Child, the new album by Jonathan Edwards – the singer-songwriter best-known for the 1971 hit single “Sunshine (Go Away Today)” – was the most-played album on folk radio during July 2015. The album also sports five of the month’s top songs, although the most-played songs were Dubl Handi’s “Cindy” and Katie Dahl’s “Crowns.” So say charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

In the more than four decades since releasing his eponymous debut that featured the catchy and anthemic “Sunshine,” Edwards has released nearly 20 albums and continued to tour regularly. His latest, Tomorrow’s Child, was produced by Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist Darrell Scott and also features Shawn Colvin, Jerry Douglas, Vince Gill and Alison Kraus.

The July 2015 FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 12,906 airplays from 136 different DJs. The number of reported spins (airplays) is shown below in parentheses, while label and release date appear in brackets. They are posted on AcousticMusicScene.com, with permission.

CD+Cover_Digital_SmallerHarpeth Rising, a young Kentucky-based folk and Americana trio, had both the most-played album (Shifted) and song (“I Am Eve”) on folk radio during August 2015. So say charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

Shifted is the trio’s fifth release including its eponymous 2010 debut. The trio – whose music fuses folk, newgrass, classical and rock stylings – is comprised of Jordana Greenberg (violin, vocals), Rebecca Reed-Lonn (banjo, vocals) and Maria Di Meglio (cello, vocals). The three met while students at Indiana University’s noted Jacobs School of Music, from which they each received performance degrees.

The August 2015 FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 12, 987 airplays from 134 different DJs. The number of reported spins (airplays) is shown below in parentheses, while label and release date appear in brackets. They are posted on AcousticMusicScene.com, with permission.

Top Albums and Songs of March 2016 (FOLKDJ-L)

Gathering Time, a Long Island, New York-based folk-rock harmony trio, had both the #1 album (Keepsake) and the most-played song (“Who Knows Where the Time Goes”) on folk radio during March 2016. So say the airplay charts compiled from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio. Gathering Time, the most-played artists of the month, also had six of the most-played songs.

Each song on Keepsake, Gathering Time’s fourth full-length CD, documents a common experience by focusing in on something tangible. Band member Hillary Foxsong, who conceptualized the album and curated its production, explained the idea behind it: “A Silver Star, a mom’s guitar, a battle scar, a lover’s letter from long ago. All are physical things imbued with greater meaning by the memories attached and the significance of what they symbolize. Each is a Keepsake.”

The collection contains 14 songs — including nine by the trio’s members (Stuart Markus, Gerry McKeveny and Foxsong), two covers of 1970s classics (including “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” by the late English folk-rock singer-songwriter Sandy Denny), one song each by Long Island songwriter Martha Trachtenberg and Catskills-based songwriter Stuart Kabak, and an interpretation of a traditional Irish/Welsh folk ballad. Blending many streams of folk-rock and Americana, Keepsake builds on the strength of the trio’s previous release, When One Door Closes…, which was #3 on the Folk-DJ chart for January 2014.

The March 2016 FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 14,009 airplays from 141 different DJs. Label and release date appear in brackets below, while the number of reported spins is shown in parentheses. The charts are posted on AcousticMusicScene.com, with permission.

Remembering Phil Ochs on the 40th Anniversary of His Death

Phil Ochs

Phil Ochs

Phil Ochs was an iconic American troubadour who passionately believed that he and his music could help change the world. Many of his songs became anthems for the anti-war movement during the turbulent 1960s, and his music continues to influence and inspire songwriters today – 40 years after his death. Among his best-known songs are “Changes,” “I Ain’t Marching Anymore,” “Small Circle of Friends,” “There But For Fortune,” and “When I’m Gone.”

Folk DJs Host Special Shows on April 9, 10

At least a couple of folk DJs will mark the 40th anniversary of Phil Ochs’ passing on April 9 by airing special programs that weekend, while others have been playing his songs this week.

Artie Martello from upstate New York plans to post a special two-hour program on Mostly Folk entitled The Final Days of Phil Ochs. It will feature 20 songs recorded by Phil and others, as well as a discussion with Phil’s sister, Sonny Ochs, about his final four months. Mostly Folk will be available online beginning at 7 a.m. ET at www.mostlyfolk.org, as well as at www.itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/mostlyfolk/id928968502?mt=2 and www.tunein.com/radio/Mostly-Folk-with-Artie-Martello-p527841.

Sonny Ochs also joins Jon Stein, host of Hootenanny Café on WTBQ-FM (www.wtbq.com) in New York’s Orange County, when he remembers the life and times of Phil Ochs on Sunday, April 10, during a two-hour special beginning at 9 p.m. ET that can also be heard @ www.tunein.com/radio/Hootenanny-Café-p137978/ and will be archived at www.talentconnections.com/podcasts.shtml.

Sonny Ochs Reflects on Her Brother

Herself the host of a radio show in upstate New York, Sonny Ochs previously shared some thoughts with AcousticMusicScene.com about her younger brother.

He was an introverted young man who loved going to the movies to watch John Wayne, Audie Murphy and actors of that ilk during his early years. He became an excellent clarinet player while in junior high school. He was good at writing as well.

We grew up in an apolitical family, but when he went to college he had a roommate named Jim Glover whose father was a socialist. Phil learned a lot from him and was able to wed his music to events of the day, thus becoming a topical songwriter. He won a guitar from Jim in a bet on the 1960 presidential election. This gave him the tool he needed to accompany his songs. The rest is history.

Phil went on to become a very prolific writer, but was brought down by manic depression, which runs in the male side of our family. He ended up committing suicide in 1976, at the age of 35.

With the U.S. engaged in foreign wars and conflicts today as it was in the 1960s, Phil Ochs’ music is as relevant now as it was then, and his sister has been helping to keep it alive. Since 1983, Sonny Ochs has been producing Phil Ochs Song Nights that feature talented artists who perform both Phil’s songs and their own to show that the art of topical songwriting is still alive and well. These shows have taken place primarily up and down the U.S. eastern seaboard but also in the midwest, far west and Canada.

Sonny Ochs also spoke about her brother in the 2011 documentary Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune. Painting what Entertainment Weekly called “an essential portrait of an artist who ought to be better known,” its airing as part of PBS Television’s Emmy Award-winning American Masters series in 2012 helped expose more people to Phil Ochs and his music. The film features commentary by Joan Baez, Billy Bragg, Tom Hayden, Christopher Hitchens, Sean Penn, Pete Seeger, Peter Yarrow and others – interspersed with performance clips of Ochs.

Of the documentary, Sonny Ochs told AcousticMusicScene.com in 2011: “It is really interesting because it shows Phil against a background of the times, and it doesn’t try to hide his blemishes. It is very honest and strong, which is why audiences seem to like it so much. It is my hope that more people will hear Phil’s music and be amazed at its relevancy [more than] 40 years after it was written. I am very proud of him!”

Sam Bush had the top album (Storyman) and three of the four most-played songs on folk radio during July 2016. So say the airplay charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

The revered founder of newgrass music, Sam Bush is a Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist and the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Americana Music Association and numerous awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. His new Sugar Hill release, which Bush describes as “my singer-songwriter” record, reflects his musical eclecticism as it incorporates elements of folk, jazz, blues, country swing and reggae, as well as bluegrass.

The July 2016 FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 14,796 airplays from 138 different DJs. Label and release date appear in brackets below, while the number of reported spins is shown in parentheses. The charts are posted on AcousticMusicScene.com, with permission.

Remembering Roz Larman, Host of “FolkScene”

Roz Larman

Roz Larman

Roz Larman, longtime host of the internationally syndicated radio program FolkScene, died unexpectedly on Oct. 10 following a recent heart attack and stroke. Originating from Los Angeles, California’s KPFK 90.7 FM, a Pacifica radio station, FolkScene was launched by Roz and her late husband Howard in 1970. Between them, they shared recorded music and live in-studio performances and artist interviews with listeners every Sunday evening for more than 45 years. Singer-Songwriters Dan Navarro and James Lee Stanley, who knew Roz well, shared their reflections with AcousticMusicScene.com.

Roz Larman took over the helm of FolkScene, widely considered one of the preeminent folk radio shows in the U.S., following Howard’s death in 2007. With her at his side as co-producer, he had hosted and steered the program since its first broadcast on February 3, 1970. With the support of her son Allen and his wife Kat, as well as program engineer Peter Cutler, she continued the tradition that he had established – presenting a weekly program of traditional and contemporary music that aired Sundays at 6 p.m. on KPFK and at various times on other stations. Several collections of the show’s in-studio performances were released on Red House Records.

James Lee Stanley recalls first meeting Roz and Howard Larman at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. “They came to a show of mine before I had a record deal,” said Stanley. “We hit it off immediately, and they invited me to be on their show. Through the years and through the various labels, I was on the show probably 20 times. [It was] always fun and always ended too soon — as did Howard’s life. With him gone, Roz took over the whole show and carried the torch. She played whatever music she thought was valid, and her home was a monument to music.”

The veteran performing and recording artist recalled: “She went through thousands of CD’s to find music that resonated for her. I have a button that reads, ‘If Roz likes it, it’s folk music.’ She knew her audience and she knew that if she liked it, they would like it. FolkScene turned us all on to so much music that we might have missed in this corporate world.”

Stanley also recalls how years after meeting the Larmans, he bought a house in the [San Fernando] Valley that turned out to be just blocks from where Roz lived. I started calling her when I was at Trader Joe’s to see if she needed anything,” he said. “I checked on her whenever I was off the road. I became her handyman and one of her go-to guys in an emergency.”

Roz was “like a sister to me,” he said. “I don’t believe her space will be filled by anyone else. There’s a piece of my heart missing and it’s in the shape of Roz Larman.”

Dan Navarro, best known for his work with the acoustic duo Lowen & Navarro and the Grammy-nominated song “We Belong” (as sung by Pat Benatar), views Roz and Howard Larman as “simply the heart and soul of West Coast folk, the music, the scene, its very presence.”

Pictured (l.-r.) are Phil Parlapiano, Steven Barker, Roz and Howard Larman, Eric Lowen, Dan Navarro and Peter Cutler.

Pictured (l.-r.) are Phil Parlapiano, Steven Barker, Roz and Howard Larman, Eric Lowen, Dan Navarro and Peter Cutler.

He noted that, through the years, “Their Pacifica radio show … presented practically everyone in folk-roots-singer-songwriter music, from legends like Tom Paxton, Loudon Wainwright, Jackson Browne, Kate Wolf, Tom Waits and the McGarrigles, 1980’s keepers-of-the-flame like Bill Morrissey, John Gorka, Cliff Eberhardt, Shawn Colvin, to genre crossers like Peter Case, Dave Alvin and Lucinda Williams, to relative newcomers like Antje Duvekot, Dar Williams and the DittyBops, and hundreds more.”

Continued Navarro: “Their blessing could, in a single stroke, engender unshakable credibility in artists whose folkiness could be considered marginal or tenuous. That was our experience in Lowen & Navarro. Indeed, as was uttered more than a few times, if Roz liked it, it was folk. Such was her taste and gravity. While we know the circle of life and art and community will continue to turn, the void Roz’s passing leaves can simply never be filled.”

Allen Larman, Roz’s son, has announced on the program’s website (www.folkscene.com) that “Folkscene will continue as a collaboration between longtime program engineer Peter Cutler, Deborah Hand-Cutler, Kat Griffin and myself. We plan to bring you the same quality programming that Roz and Howard brought you, which will include new interviews, live concerts and all of the latest new releases.”

Hudson Harding Sampler, Vol. 11: Happy Holidays, a compilation CD distributed by radio promoter Erik Balkey, was the most-played album on folk radio during December 2016. Dar Williams’ “Christians and the Pagans” tied with John McCutcheon’s classic “Christmas in the Trenches” as the month’s most-played song. So say charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

The December 2016 FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 14,397 airplays from 141 different DJs. Label and release date appear in brackets below, while the number of reported spins is shown in parentheses. The top albums and songs charts are posted on AcousticMusicScene.com, with permission.
